Tutorial: Adding a Background

This tutorial will show step by step how to get a background onto your Catster profile page. The background we will use is from valentinejoys.com and looks like this:

You don't have to be a plus member to add a background. You do get one bio field with a free account and you could use it to fancy up your page. (There is a limit to the number of characters you can enter into a bio field, so you won't be able to have nearly as many goodies as a plus member.)

Step 1

Find a background you like.

We'll use this Pink Hearts Background for the tutorial. Open this link so we can copy the code in the next step.

See the links section of this site for some sites that offer backgrounds. A lot of sites these days let you hotlink, that is they let you use the file that's stored on their server. If so, they usually have the code right there for you to copy and paste.

You may find a background you like that you know that url address for (http://www.thesite/background.gif), but they didn't give you the code. If that's the case, the format of the code should be:
<style>body { background: url(http://www.thesite.background.gif); }</style>

Or, you may find a background you like, but that you are not allowed to hotlink to. If that's the case, you'll have to save it to your computer, then upload it to a server (such as photobucket). We're not going to cover how to get the image to a server in this tutorial. To save a background, right click anywhere on the background, and choose 'Save Background As..' in order to save it to your computer.

Step 2

Copy the code.

Copy the background code. If you need more help on how to do that, see the 'how to 'cut and paste' section of this site.

Step 3

From anywhere on Catster, click on the 'My Account' button. Then click on 'Modify biography & traits'.

Step 4

Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the 'Extra bio fields' section. There is one field for regular Catsters and eight fields for plus subscribers.

Step 5

Paste in your code in the right box (in the Body section). (right click in the box, then select 'Paste' from the menu)

UPDATE: We no longer have to type anything in the field name section. We used to have to put something in that field or our code would disappear & we'd have to paste it in again. You could enter something there such as 'background' just so it will be easy to tell what's in that bio field later on.

You may be able to attatch the background code at the end of another field, perhaps the field you used to talk about your best catster friend for example. It doesn't have to have it's own box, it can go into any box that has room.

Step 6

Simply click on the 'submit your changes button' and you're done!
